2024 Open Access Week

The MSU Library is excited to be a key participant in the global Open Access Week celebrations, a significant event in the academic calendar. As the MSU Library, we are committed to providing a platform for the MSU academic community, researchers, librarians, and the university administration to engage in meaningful discussions about the benefits and challenges of open-access publishing. This year, the celebration will run from the 21st to the 27th of October, 2024.

To participate in the celebrations, the MSU Library will host a hybrid workshop on open-access publishing on the 22nd of October, 2024, in the Senate Room. You are invited to attend this workshop, which will centre around the theme “Community Over Commercialization.” This theme aligns with the values of academia and resonates with our university’s mission, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose. We believe it’s an important conversation that will significantly impact our academic community, and your participation will substantially enrich the discussion.

The workshop will unpack:

  1. a)What is open-access publishing, and why does it matter?
  2. b)Different open-access publishing models.
  3. c)Benefits of open-access publishing for the author and the institution.
  4. d)Predatory journals and how to prevent them.
  5. e)Hijacked journals and how to prevent them.
  6. f)Exploring the correlation between open access and increased citations.
  7. g)Altimetric and measuring broader research impact.
  8. h)Enhancing your online research presence through open access
  9. i)Open Science and its role in future research.
  10. j)Choosing the right open access journal to publish in.
  11. k)Ethical considerations in open-access publishing.
  12. l)Understanding Creative Commons Licenses.
  13. m)Choosing a suitable license for your work.
  14. n)MSU Institutional Repository (MSUIR).

Our speakers, Professor Upenyu Guyo and Milica Ševkusic, are esteemed scholars in open-access publishing. Professor Upenyu Guyo is a distinguished academic known for his exceptional research and innovative contributions to high-impact, peer-reviewed journals, and he is a leading advocate for open-access publishing at the Midlands State University. Milica Ševkusic, the Project Coordinator for the EIFL Open Access Programme, is a renowned expert in open-access publishing. Her role as the EIFL-Open Access Programme Country Coordinator since 2014 showcases her commitment to supporting open-access journals in Serbia. Both speakers will provide invaluable insights into open-access publishing, ensuring a high-quality and informative workshop.
